To hypnotise a person means to put him into a state that resembles deep sleep, during which he does only what he is told to do by the person who has hypnotised him. The word comes from Greek meaning sleep.

No one can be hypnotized if he doesn’t want to be, and must be of normal intelligence, for lunatics and mental defectives cannot be hypnotised. Usually the person is made comfortable and told by the hypnotist to look up at a red light or at the hypnotist’s finger or pencil. Then the hypnotist talks in a low, expressionless voice saying,”You are feeling sleepy. You are feeling heavy. You are going to sleep.” Such phrases are repeated until the person really falls asleep. Sometimes this happens quickly , but with some persons it might take a very long time.

A person who has been hypnotised will not do things that he would not normally do if he were awake, but he will obey many instructions from the hypnotist, such as walking about or writing on a blackboard. People are often hypnotised on the stage, in order to amuse the audience, but hypnotism is used for much more serious and useful purposes as well. For instance, it has been found that people under hypnosis can remember and talk about all the things that happened in the past, although they will have completely forgotten about them again when they wake up. So, as many people worry about things that happened to them a long time ago, but which they cannot remember properly, hypnosis can help in the cure of troubles in the mind.

It is thought,also, that hypnosis can be useful to doctors and dentists, as patients who are hypnotised do not feel pain and will do what they are told. In particular, hypnosis may be useful for women who are having babies and for people who are having their teeth attended to.

There is nothing strange or frightening about hypnotism. Most people can be hypnotised if they want to be, and with a little training most people could become hypnotists. Sometimes you will hear about a type of hypnotism called mesmerism, named after a Viennese doctor, Franz Anton Mesmer, who treated patients with this method. Hypnotism, however, is a very old art, for it was practised by priest-doctors in ancient Egypt and Greece. Witch doctors too often made use of it.
